We recommend tipping a Lyft driver 15–20% of the fare, in cash or in the Lyft app.
Do you tip a Lyft driver?
Yes. We recommend a tip for a Lyft driver, in cash or in the app.
How much to tip a Lyft driver
Use 15–20% of the fare Lyft charged you for the ride. A short trip uses the same percentage as a long one. The dollar amount is smaller when the fare is smaller.

Effective tip
18%
The calculator starts at 18%. Leave Luggage on None and Traffic Conditions on Normal, because the other settings change the rate. Some luggage multiplies the tip by 1.05, heavy luggage by 1.15, light traffic by 0.95, and heavy traffic by 1.10. Enter the fare. These rows are examples of the recommendation. They are not Lyft prices.
| Example fare | Tip at 15% | Tip at 18% | Tip at 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $12 | $1.80 | $2.16 | $2.40 |
| $25 | $3.75 | $4.50 | $5.00 |
| $40 | $6.00 | $7.20 | $8.00 |
| $60 | $9.00 | $10.80 | $12.00 |
A $25 fare at 18% is a $4.50 tip.

How to tip in the Lyft app
Lyft's help page says "100% of tips go to drivers." It also says you can tip with cash or through the Lyft app, and that tips added in the app are charged to the card on file. (How to tip your driver - Lyft Help, checked October 24, 2026)
The same page says "You can add a tip up to 30 days after a ride is complete." (How to tip your driver - Lyft Help, checked October 24, 2026)
It also says in-app tips cannot exceed $50 or 200% of the ride cost. (How to tip your driver - Lyft Help, checked October 24, 2026)
Those are Lyft's limits, not a second recommendation. Our recommendation stays 15–20% of the fare. A 20% tip on an ordinary fare is under both caps. If 15–20% would pass $50, tip $50 in the app or hand the rest in cash. The help page is the source for the cap.
If you set a percentage as your default tip, Lyft says a minimum of $1 applies. (How to tip your driver - Lyft Help, checked October 24, 2026)
That $1 is Lyft's floor for the default-tip setting. It is not our recommended tip. On a fare where 15% is more than $1, use 15–20%.
When to use 15% or 20%
Use 20% when the driver loads bags or adds a stop you asked for. Use 15% for a direct ride. Skip the tip if the driver is rude or takes a route you did not agree to. You can still rate the ride in the app. The rating and the tip are separate.
